Deer vs Motorcycle Crash

Deer vs Motorcycle Crash

Deer vs Motorcycle CrashIdaho State Police investigated a deer vs motorcycle crash south of Inkom. A motorcyclist from Pocatello was driving northbound when a herd of deer came onto the roadway. The passenger on the motorcycle was ejected after hitting a deer. Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing helmets at the time of the motorcycle crash. The passenger had to be air lifted to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. Traffic was blocked for about two and a half hours while crews worked to clear the accident.

How to Avoid a Deer vs Motorcycle Crash

The Insurance Information Institute reported that 1.6 million deer-car collisions happen every year. Of these 200 are fatal and tens of thousands result in serious injuries. Vehicle damages from deer collisions are over $3.6 billion. Avoid and survive car collisions with deer by using the following tips.

  1. Be alert and aware of deer at dusk and dawn. These are the most likely periods that deer will be out or near the road. These times happen to also be periods when a driver’s vision is most compromised. Mating season (between October and January) also brings more deer out. To avoid a car accident involving a deer, slow down and stay alert; especially after dark.
  2. If you see one deer there are probably more. Deer are pack animals. They rarely travel alone. When you see one deer cross the road chances are there are more nearby. Slow down and be on the look out for more deer that may dart in front of your vehicle.
  3. Always wear a seat beat. Wearing a seat belt will protect you in the event of a car accident. A seat beat may not prevent a collision with a deer, but it can reduce injuries in most cases. This is especially true if the driver loses control of the vehicle.
  4. Drive down the center lane when possible to avoid hitting a deer. On a multi-lane road, the center lane is the safest course of travel and your best bet to avoid hitting a deer that may dart out into traffic.
  5. Never swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Swerving often causes drivers to lose control of the vehicle. In addition, you may end up hitting something much more damaging than a deer. If a deer appears in front of you when driving down the road, stay the course and hit the deer.
  6. Alert deer by honking! Experts recommend one long blast of the horn to scare deer out of the road.

Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Most Common Causes of Motorcycle AccidentsCauses of motorcycle accidents are usually obvious. Though most motorcyclists are extremely cautious when driving, accidents do occur. Idaho State Police reported a motorcycle accident on Mink Creek Road and North Summers Way Monday morning. A Pocatello man was riding his motorcycle when he lost control and crashed. The driver was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for injury evaluation. It is still unclear the cause of this motorcycle accident.

Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Unpredictable things can happen while riding a motorcycle. Alarming statistics show significantly high motorcycle accident injuries or even death. Motorcyclists should use extreme caution on the road and hire personal injury attorney Brent Gordon when necessary. It is important to understand some common causes of motorcycle accidents. Here are some common causes of motorcycle accidents to be aware of.

Lane Splitting

Often when traffic is heavy, a motorcyclist may decide to drive between lanes. Or a motorcyclist may decide to drive between cars moving slowly. Lane splitting is one of the major causes of motorcycle accidents. Here are a few reasons why lane splitting should be avoided:

  • Other drivers don’t normally expect a motorcyclist to split lanes.
  • Less space to maneuver.
  • Other vehicles are closer to the motorcycle.

Hazards in the Road

Road hazards to be aware of include: uneven lanes, potholes, dead animals or anything else sitting in the lane. Hitting a road hazard could be deadly for a motorcyclist.

Speeding

It is always dangerous to speed no matter what you are driving. Driving fast on a motorcycle is a great temptation for many. However, most motorcycle accidents are caused by excessive speeding.

Driving Drunk

Driving under the influence of alcohol is never okay but even worse on a motorcycle. Almost half of all motorcycle accidents are caused by drunk driving.

Turning Left

A common place for a motorcycle accident to take place is in an intersection. Since motorcycles are smaller and harder to see, they often go unseen when turning. A motorcyclist could also be hit by a vehicle turning left. Be aware and cautious of other drivers turning when driving a motorcycle.
