Idaho State Police reported a fatal truck accident involving a semi-truck pulling a trailer and a cargo van. Both the semi-truck and cargo van were traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 20 near Rexburg. The cargo van was traveling behind the semi when it collided with the back of a trailer the semi-truck was pulling. Police say the semi was traveling much slower than the van. The driver of the van died at the scene of the accident. Westbound lanes of traffic were blocked for nearly four hours while crews worked to clear the accident.
How Slow-Moving Vehicles Cause Car Accidents
In 2013, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 82 fatal car accidents being caused by slow-moving vehicles. Frequently, these types of accidents are blamed on the driver of the car that hit the slow-moving vehicle. For instance, they were driving too fast or not paying attention. However, studies have also shown that a normal driver does not have the human capacity to react before a collision occurs when it comes to some slow-moving vehicles. The following are some of the biggest problems when it comes to slow-moving vehicles and smaller cars.
The difference in speed between a slow-moving vehicle and a smaller car can be anywhere between 5 and 40 mph indifference. This makes it difficult for cars to judge the distance and time needed to slow down as they approach a slower moving vehicle. It is often thought that vehicles driving on the same roadway are traveling about the same rate of speed. However, this is not always the case. Especially on rural Idaho roads.
Many drivers of slow-moving vehicles will regularly check the traffic behind them to avoid backing up traffic. However, sometimes the large load they are pulling limits visibility. The operator of a large load may not be able to see a vehicle traveling closely behind them.
Drivers of smaller cars are often impatient when it comes to driving behind a slow-moving vehicle. Most collisions with slow-moving vehicles happen when the vehicle traveling behind attempts to pass in an unsafe area. Drivers often misjudge the length and width of slower vehicles or fail to leave a big enough gap to pass safely. Many head-on collisions also occur from vehicles attempts to pass slow-moving vehicles.
The number one thing to remember when behind a slow-moving vehicle is to be patient. Most drivers of large loads know they are holding people up and will pull over or otherwise allow traffic to pass when it is safe to do so. It is not worth taking an unnecessary risk!
