Injury Car Accident in Pocatello Caused by Road DebrisIdaho State Police reported an injury car accident in Pocatello caused by road debris. A commercial vehicle reportedly struck an overpass causing it to spill debris onto I-15. Multiple vehicles got flat tires from hitting the debris and also caused traffic to slow. The car accident occurred when a vehicle was rear-ended by a negligent driver who was not paying attention to traffic slowing. The driver which was rear-ended was taken by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. Officials say both drivers involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Both lanes of northbound traffic were blocked for about 15 minutes while crews worked to clear the accident. A southbound lane of travel was also blocked for about an hour and a half.

Car Accidents Caused by Debris in the Roadway

According to a study conducted by AAA, between 2011 and 2014, 200,000 car accidents were caused by debris in the road. These accidents resulted in over 500 deaths and close to 39,000 injuries. Over one-third of these deaths occurred because the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting debris and lost control or hit another vehicle. Determining fault for these types of accidents can be difficult. Often times it is unclear where the debris came from. In this case, a party can usually make a claim with their uninsured motorist coverage to receive compensation for damages. Contact an experienced car accident attorney from Brent Gordon Law Firm to help you with this.

How to Avoid Debris in the Roadway to Avoid a Car Accident

As much as 37 percent of fatal car accidents in road-debris collisions are from drivers attempting to dodge an object in the road. Overcorrecting causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle and often results in a serious car crash. Road debris creates a dangerous driving condition for everyone. However, there are steps to take to reduce the risk of being involved in a car accident when there is road debris.

  1. Be prepared by constantly scanning the road in front of you. Knowing what is 12 to 15 seconds ahead can give you enough time to avoid hitting road debris.
  2. Always try to keep an open space or an out around your vehicle. If you drive in the far left or right lane, often times you can use the emergency lane to avoid hitting an object in the road. If you are driving in the center lane, try to keep far enough away from other vehicles to leave space for you to move over.
  3. If you are forced to swerve or hit debris, hit the debris. Swerving often leads to more serious accidents.
