How to Avoid a Head-on Collision

Head-on car accidents usually result in serious injuries or even deadly. You do not want to be the victim of a fatal car accident. If you see a car coming directly at you, how would you react? Here are some tips to help avoid a head-on collision.

Remember “the four R’s”

  • Read ahead on the road

Constantly be scanning the road ahead of you to see what’s coming. Look beyond the next curve, look up to the next hill, etc. Be aware of the vehicles driving around you and what they might do.

  • Steer right

On a two-lane road. Drive slightly to the right of your lane. This will make it easier for cars attempting to pass the ability to see you more easily. Also, if they don’t see you and do start to pass, driving to the right will hopefully give you enough space to not hit them.

  • Reduce how fast you are going

When any hazard arises while driving it is always a good idea to slow down. If you see a car coming directly at you head-on, reducing your speed will hopefully allow you enough time to move out of the way. Don’t, however, slam on your brakes. This could possibly only create other problems such as being rear ended.

  • Ride off the road

If necessary, ride off the road safely to avoid a head-on car accident. As you steer your car off the road be careful to not overcorrect or jerk your steering wheel. Doing so would then cause your vehicle to roll.

Avoid a Fatal Car Accident

When attempting to avoid a head-on car accident, always steer to the right. Never steer into the center line or into oncoming traffic. Also, remember to never jerk the steering wheel. You could potentially lose control and cause your vehicle to roll over. If you see no way out of a crash, try to hit on an angle instead of directly head on. Other factors that will help you to avoid a head-on collision include wearing a seatbelt, driving the speed limit, using your headlights in bad weather or in the dark and paying close attention to the road always.
