Semi Truck Overturns on Northbound I-15 Causing Injury

Semi Truck Overturns on Northbound I-15 Causing Injury

Semi Truck Overturns on Northbound I-15 Causing InjuryA semi truck overturned on northbound I-15 causing injury to the semi truck driver. Idaho State Police reported a sing-vehicle injury crash south of Malad when a semi truck hauling a single trailer drove off the left shoulder causing the semi to overturn. The driver of the semi truck was taken by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. Police reported the left lane of traffic blocked for about six hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage. The following are some tips to avoid an accident when debris is on the roadway following a semi truck overturned.

Tips to Avoid an Accident from Road Debris

The following are a few tips to help you avoid a car crash with road debris.

  1. Scan the road ahead continually to search for any road debris or hazards.
  2. Always have a plan to escape in the event there should suddenly appear debris in your lane. Know where other cars around you. Maintain an open space in front and at least one side of your vehicle at all times. Should a need arise, you could steer into that open space to avoid a collision with an object on the road.
  3. Never tailgate! Leave a safe traveling distance between you and the car in front of you at all times. A good suggested amount of time is three to four seconds. More if the roadway is in bad condition.
  4. When driving at night or at dusk, be especially alert for animals or debris on the roadway.
  5. If you are about to hit debris, safely slow down as much as possible prior to making contact and try to hit it with a tire.

Road Debris Car Crash Statistics

Debris-related car crashes are often preventable. In fact, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, two in three car crashes caused by debris result from items falling from a vehicle due to unsecured cargo or improper maintenance. Common road debris includes things that detach from a vehicle or unsecured cargo such as furniture. Other common road debris could also include a tow trailer becoming separated from pulling vehicle.

Though every state has laws making it illegal for items to fall from a vehicle, fines can range from just $10 up to $5,000. In addition, 16 states list jail as a possible punishment for offenders of lost cargo.

Injury Semi-Truck Accident on State Highway 33

Injury Semi-Truck Accident on State Highway 33

Injury Semi-Truck Accident on State Highway 33Idaho State Police reported an injury semi-truck accident on State Highway 33 in Driggs, Idaho. A passenger vehicle was driving northbound on SH33 when the driver crossed over the center line and into a semi-truck driving southbound. The driver of the passenger vehicle was transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. It was also reported that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the semi-truck accident. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured and did not need to be transported. It was reported that the highway was blocked for about three and a half hours will crews worked to clear the accident.

Injury Semi-Truck Accident Statistics

When a semi-truck accident occurs, it is more likely to result in death or serious injury than an accident between two small vehicles. The accident is far more dangerous for the driver in the car than it is for the driver in the truck. In fact, according to the National Institute of Traffic and Highway Safety, 73 percent of all truck crash injuries and deaths are suffered by the driver in the car.

The following are more nationwide injury semi-truck accident statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

  • Injuries from a semi-truck accident account for eight percent of all fatal crashes and three percent of all automobile injuries in the U.S.
  • 63 percent of tractor trailer accidents occur on rural roads.
  • Only five percent of semi-truck accident was due to a semi-truck rolling over.
  • 83 percent of semi-truck accidents happen on weekdays.
  • Only one percent of truck accident injuries are fatal.
  • 23 percent of truck accidents result in injury.

Tips to Prevent a Head-on Truck Accident

  • On multiple-lane highways, drive in the right-hand lane. This will make it safer and easier to pull over into a ditch or off the side of the road rather than hitting head-on.
  • If you see an oncoming vehicle heading straight for you, quickly veer to the right. This will prevent you from going into lanes of other vehicles.
  • Gain more stability by keeping the two wheels on the driver’s side on the pavement when pulling over to a shoulder.
  • Choose to hit a fixed object on the side of the road rather than hitting another vehicle. The fixed object has no momentum and will usually cause less injury.
  • If you come across an aggressive driver, don’t react to them in the same manner. Let them pass.
  • Semi-trucks require more time to react. Avoid making unpredictable actions such as quick lane changes.
  • Avoid driving in a semi-truck driver’s blind spot. Always make sure you can see a truck driver in their side mirror. This guarantee’s that they can see you.

Determining Fault After a Semi Truck Accident

Determining Fault After a Semi Truck Accident

Determining Fault After a Semi Truck AccidentDetermining fault after a semi truck accident can be complex. Accidents involving semi trucks often have a number of factors that may have contributed to the accident such as weather, road conditions, driver error, vehicle malfunctions, etc. These factors complicate the process of determining fault for a semi truck accident case. An investigation of the accident will take into account all these factors, as well as police reports and statements from eye witnesses, are also used to determine fault after a semi truck accident. The driver or drivers who are determined to be at fault for causing the semi truck accident will be responsible for compensating any person who was injured or wrongfully killed in the accident.

Semi truck companies are required by federal law to keep documents about their trucks and their drivers for a period of time. After that time, they may destroy those documents. You need to hire a semi truck attorney immediately after a truck accident. Evidence needs to be preserved that can be used to demonstrate that the trucking company and its driver were negligent. An attorney can protect your rights by sending a special letter called a spoliation letter to the trucking company. After receipt of the letter, the trucking company will be forced to preserve the documents. If the documents show a pattern of willful and reckless behavior, you may be entitled to recover punitive damages.

Do not hurt your chances of obtaining a full recovery by waiting to hire a semi truck accident attorney. After the trucking company has destroyed valuable evidence that you could have used to prove your case, you may not receive as great of a settlement.

Fatal Semi Truck Accident Caused by Icy Conditions

Fatal Semi Truck Accident Caused by Icy Conditions

Fatal Semi Truck Accident Involving Rigby ManIdaho State Police reported a fatal semi-truck accident caused by icy conditions. A Rigby man was driving west in icy conditions when his van slide into a semi-truck driving next to him. Officials say the semi-truck driver was not injured in the crash. Unfortunately, though the Rigby man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, he succumbed to his injuries from hitting the semi-truck. Idaho State Police are still investigating this crash.

Tips for Driving in Icy Conditions

The following are a few tips for winter driving to keep in mind before attempting to drive on the snow and ice.

  1. Know how your car reacts to certain situations. Every vehicle handles differently, especially on wet or icy roads. Knowing how to react to the way your vehicle handles can prove to be very helpful in an emergency situation.
  2. Make sure your car is well maintained and ready for winter driving. For example, making sure all fluids under the hood are topped off, floor mats are properly installed, headlights are working properly, tires are in good condition, etc.
  3. Go slow! Remember it is harder to control or stop your vehicle on wet, slick or snow-covered roads.
  4. Increase your following distance to give yourself extra time to stop.
  5. Always wear a seat belt and make sure everyone else in the car is buckled also.
  6. Be prepared by keeping your gas tank full, warm clothes in your car, jumper cables, etc.
  7. Give a snow plow extra space by not traveling beside them. Also, if you are following a snow plow, leave extra space and don’t stop too close to them.
  8. If possible, avoid driving in the snow and wait for the storm to pass.

Driver of Stalled Vehicle Injured in Semi Truck Accident on I-15

Driver of Stalled Vehicle Injured in Semi Truck Accident on I-15

Driver of Stalled Vehicle Injured in Semi Truck Accident on I-15The driver of a stalled vehicle on I-15 was injured in a semi truck accident according to Idaho State Police. A Ford Explorer was broken down on I-15 and partially blocking the left lane. A semi truck struck the stalled vehicle injuring the driver who was waiting for help to arrive inside the vehicle. The injured driver was taken by ground ambulance to a nearby medical center for evaluation of injuries. Both drivers were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the semi truck accident. Traffic was blocked in the left lane for about an hour as the crash was investigated.

Tips to Be Safe If Your Vehicle Stalls

Having your vehicle stall can be a terrifying experience; especially if it happens while you are cruising down the highway. The following are some tips to help keep yourself safe in the event that your vehicle stalls.

The moment you suspect your vehicle is failing, pull over to the side of the road. Remember to signal and be courteous to other drivers. If you are unable to pull over, remain in the lane but do not get out of the vehicle. Instead turn on your hazard lights and call the police for help.

Never try to cross a highway on foot. Instead, stay in your vehicle, turn on your hazard lights and call for help. It is also a good idea to watch for approaching traffic. If you see someone coming too close to your vehicle, honk to try to get their attention.

If you absolutely must get out of the car, do so on the side of the vehicle closest to the side of the road (usually the right side). If you must stand outside your vehicle, only stand in front of any oncoming traffic.

Even if you are mechanically inclined, never work on a vehicle in an area that is unsafe to do so. It is incredibly dangerous next to moving traffic even with emergency warning devices such as flares or safety triangles.

One Injured in Semi-Truck Accident East of Soda Springs

One Injured in Semi-Truck Accident East of Soda Springs

One Injured in Semi-Truck Accident East of Soda SpringsIdaho State Police reported one injured in a semi-truck accident east of Soda Springs on US30. The driver of a Jeep Wrangler was reportedly in the right lane of eastbound US30. A semi-truck pulling a single tank trailer was behind the Jeep in the left lane. The Jeep turned in front of the semi striking the Jeep on the driver’s side. Officials say the Jeep came to rest in the roadway and the semi-truck came to rest on the left shoulder. The driver of the Jeep was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was transported by ground ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. Traffic was blocked for about three and a half hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

Turning into the Correct Lane to Avoid a Collision

Often times drivers may become confused as to which lane they must turn into when making a left turn. In some states, it is illegal to enter the right lane after a left-hand turn is completed. The Idaho Drivers Manual states the following regarding left turns.

“Give your signal and approach the intersection in the lane closest to the left that is open to traffic going your direction. If you are on a two-lane road, you should move to the left side of your lane.  Yield the right of way to pedestrians and oncoming vehicles. When safe, turn into the nearest lane in which traffic moves the direction you want to go. Do not cut the corner.

Vehicles in the left lane must turn left. Vehicles in the right lane may turn left or continue straight ahead. Vehicles turning left must remain in their lane of travel until after completing the turn.”
